QUESTION 1: Just what is a termite?

Termites are small, pale to brownish black in color, insects that feed on wood. The opening picture of this webpage shows a picture of drywood termites, common to California (see Univ. Toronto link for more on what other termites look like for other areas of the United States). Termites' closest insect relatives are cockroaches! Termites have been in north America for more than 20 million years. There are at least 50 different kinds (species) of termites in North America. However, most can be lumped into one of three ecological groups; dampwood, drywood, and subterranean (see UC Davis Pest Note link for more termite ecological groups). Dampwood termites are common in fallen logs in forests and are uncommon as structural pests. Dampwood termites are our largest species of termite in north America (more half an inch). Subterranean termites are the most common ecological group of termites encountered. They are our smallest ecological group of termite, less than a quarter inch in length. Subterranean termites form large nests in the ground and forage out to attack wood using shelter tubes (also called mudtubes) that they construct. These tubes are constructed from the soil, bits of chewed wood, and excrement from termites. Drywood termites are opposite in their ecology compared to subterranean termites; they do not require soil contact. Drywood termites attack wood above soil level. Drywood termites are larger than subterranean termites but smaller than dampwood termites; about half an inch in size (see Urban Entomology, Washington State, and UC Davis Pest Notes links for more on termite damage).

What Are Subterranean Termites?

Subterranean termites are the most destructive and most common type of termite found in Virginia and throughout the Tidewater region. These termites live in underground colonies and travel through soil and mud tubes to reach wood structures above ground.

Because they remain hidden inside walls, crawlspaces, and foundations, subterranean termites can cause extensive structural damage long before homeowners realize there is a problem.

According to the Virginia Tech Extension, subterranean termites are responsible for millions of dollars in property damage each year across Virginia.

How Do Subterranean Termites Damage Homes?

Subterranean termites feed on cellulose found in wood and wood-based materials. They typically enter homes through foundation cracks, plumbing penetrations, expansion joints, and areas where wood comes into contact with soil.

Once inside, termites hollow out wood from the inside, weakening floor systems, support beams, and wall framing while leaving the exterior surface intact. This makes infestations difficult to detect without a professional termite inspection.

What Is the Best Treatment for Subterranean Termites?

One of the most effective treatments for subterranean termites is a professional liquid soil treatment using Termidor® and Termidor® HE.

According to the manufacturer, Termidor® HE by BASF is a non-repellent termiticide. Termites cannot detect the treated area, allowing them to pass through it and unknowingly transfer the product to other termites in the colony through normal social behavior.

More information on Termidor® HE:
https://www.pestcontrol.basf.us/products/termidor–he.html

This process, known as the Transfer Effect®, allows the treatment to reach deep into the termite colony and eliminate it at the source — not just the termites that are visible.

How Long Does Termidor® Take to Work?

In most cases, Termidor® treatments can control and eliminate subterranean termite colonies in as little as three months when applied properly by a licensed professional.

Because the product is slow-acting, termites continue their normal activity long enough to spread the treatment throughout the colony, making it significantly faster and more effective than traditional bait and monitoring systems.
